Qualifying NEET PG is only the first step toward securing a postgraduate medical seat. The counselling process is equally important because your final allotment depends on your NEET PG rank, eligibility, category, choice order, applicable reservation rules and seat availability.

NEET PG counselling takes place through more than one system. The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) conducts counselling for specified All India, central, deemed-university and other participating seats, while separate state counselling authorities conduct counselling for seats under their respective jurisdiction.

This guide explains the NEET PG 2026 counselling process, the difference between MCC and state counselling, how choice filling works, what candidates should prepare in advance, and what is officially known so far.

NEET PG 2026 Counselling: Current Status

NEET PG 2026 was scheduled by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) for August 30, 2026. NBEMS subsequently issued notices concerning affected candidates at two Jaipur examination centres as well.

The NEET PG 2026 result is expected by September 30, 2026, according to the result timeline reported from the 2026 examination information bulletin. As of September 17, 2026, the result has not yet been declared.

More importantly for counselling, MCC has not yet published the NEET PG 2026 MD/MS/DNB round-wise counselling schedule. MCC's PG schedule section is currently still displaying schedules related to the NEET PG 2025 counselling cycle.

Therefore, candidates should not treat any unofficial Round 1, Round 2, Round 3 or Stray Vacancy dates circulating online as confirmed until MCC publishes the official 2026 schedule.

Similarly, the final 2026 counselling registration fees, security deposit requirements, participating seat matrix and round-specific exit or upgradation rules should be checked only after the official MCC Information Bulletin and counselling schedule are released.

Who Conducts NEET PG 2026 Counselling?

One of the most important things candidates need to understand is that postgraduate medical counselling is divided between MCC counselling and state counselling.

MCC NEET PG Counselling

According to MCC, its PG counselling jurisdiction includes 50% All India Quota seats of participating states, 100% seats of specified Central Universities and Central Institutes subject to their eligibility conditions, 100% seats of Deemed Universities, specified ESIC PG seats and registration for Armed Forces Medical Services institutions.

MCC also publishes and allots DNB broad-speciality seats through its NEET PG counselling process. MCC's recent PG counselling records include MD/MS as well as DNB clear and virtual vacancies.

State NEET PG Counselling

Individual state counselling authorities generally conduct counselling for the state-quota portion of government medical-college seats and postgraduate seats in private medical colleges that fall under the state's counselling system.

However, candidates should not assume that every private PG seat is handled by the state.

Deemed University PG seats are counselled by MCC, not through the regular state counselling process. MCC officially lists 100% of Deemed University seats under its PG counselling jurisdiction.

State eligibility rules also differ considerably. Depending on the state, eligibility may be linked to factors such as MBBS study within the state, domicile, institutional status, service requirements, reservation category or other conditions specified in the state's counselling notification.

Candidates must therefore read the official state-specific NEET PG counselling prospectus instead of assuming that the eligibility rules of one state apply to another.

Important: AIIMS and JIPMER PG Admissions Are Not Through NEET PG MCC Counselling

A common source of confusion is AIIMS and JIPMER.

For postgraduate MD/MS admissions, institutes such as AIIMS and JIPMER participate in INI-CET, not regular NEET PG counselling through MCC.

For example, the July 2026 INI-CET seat-allocation results published by AIIMS included MD/MS seats at AIIMS institutes and JIPMER Puducherry.

Therefore, candidates targeting AIIMS, JIPMER and other participating Institutes of National Importance should separately follow the INI-CET admission and counselling process.

MCC vs State Counselling: Can You Participate in Both?

Qualifying NEET PG does not automatically mean that a candidate is eligible for every seat available through every counselling authority.

Candidates who meet the applicable eligibility conditions may participate in MCC counselling as well as one or more state counselling processes.

However, each counselling system requires separate registration and has its own eligibility conditions, documents, fees, timelines and seat-allotment rules.

Candidates should also carefully monitor rules governing candidates who join a seat through one counselling system and later receive or seek another seat. MCC and state authorities exchange admission information during counselling, and restrictions can apply in later rounds.

Always check the applicable year's official counselling bulletin before resigning, upgrading or joining another seat.

How MCC NEET PG Counselling Generally Works

The detailed NEET PG 2026 scheme will become final only after MCC publishes its 2026 Information Bulletin.

In recent counselling cycles, MCC has generally used Round 1, Round 2, Round 3 and an Online Stray Vacancy Round. The same structure should not be treated as officially confirmed for 2026 until MCC publishes the new counselling scheme.

Registration and Payment

Candidates first register through the official MCC counselling portal using the required NEET PG and personal details.

One important distinction should be understood: in previous MCC counselling schemes, the registration fee and refundable security deposit have been separate components. The registration fee should not simply be described as partially refundable.

The exact 2026 amounts and refund/forfeiture conditions should be taken from the NEET PG 2026 MCC Information Bulletin once released. MCC's official PG information confirms this distinction between a non-refundable registration fee and refundable security deposit in its counselling framework.

Choice Filling

After registration, candidates select available specialities, colleges, institutions and seat categories and arrange them according to their actual preference.

Choice order is extremely important.

If College A is genuinely preferred over College B, College A should normally be placed higher. Candidates should not arrange choices simply according to the college they think they are more likely to get.

The allotment system considers factors including the candidate's rank, eligibility, category/reservation rules, submitted preference order and available seats.

Choice Locking

MCC provides a specified period for choice filling and locking.

Candidates should carefully review the entire preference order before the deadline. The exact locking and automatic-locking provisions applicable to NEET PG 2026 must be checked from the new MCC bulletin rather than copied from a previous counselling year.

Seat Allotment

MCC processes the choices according to the applicable merit, reservation, eligibility and seat-availability rules.

The counselling process is not first-come, first-served, so registering earlier within the official registration window does not itself provide a better merit position.

Reporting to the Allotted Institute

Candidates allotted a seat must follow MCC's reporting instructions within the notified period.

This normally involves document verification, completion of the institute's admission formalities and payment of applicable institutional fees.

Candidates should carefully verify the final reporting requirements for their allotted institution because additional documents can sometimes be required beyond the standard MCC checklist.

Round 1, Round 2, Round 3 and Stray Vacancy Rules

Candidates should be particularly careful with this section.

Rules regarding free exit, resignation, upgradation, security-deposit forfeiture, eligibility for subsequent rounds and eligibility for the Stray Vacancy Round can change between counselling cycles.

Therefore, it is not advisable to publish a fixed statement such as “you can always freeze, float or resign” for NEET PG 2026 until MCC releases its official 2026 Information Bulletin.

Before accepting, resigning or attempting to upgrade a seat, candidates should read the rules applicable to that specific round.

A decision that is permitted in Round 1 may have very different consequences in Round 2 or Round 3.

How State NEET PG Counselling Is Different

State counselling operates separately from MCC counselling.

Candidates normally need to complete a new registration on the official state counselling portal. MCC registration does not automatically register a candidate for state counselling.

Each state may define its own eligibility criteria, reservation policies, institutional quotas, service-related benefits, document requirements and fee/security-deposit rules within the applicable legal and regulatory framework.

For PG admissions especially, avoid assuming that “domicile is compulsory in every state.” State-quota eligibility varies significantly across India and may depend on MBBS study, domicile, service conditions or other criteria.

Candidates should therefore download and read their state's official NEET PG 2026 prospectus or information bulletin before applying.

What About DNB Seats?

This is another area where candidates often get confused.

For post-MBBS DNB broad-speciality seats offered through NEET PG, MCC has included DNB seats in its PG counselling seat matrices and counselling rounds. Recent MCC PG counselling documents specifically show MD/MS and DNB vacancies together.

This should not be confused with Post Diploma DNB admissions.

Post Diploma DNB admission involves DNB-PDCET and a separate NBEMS counselling process. NBEMS has, for example, separately conducted centralised counselling for Post Diploma DNB seats for the 2026 admission session.

So candidates must first identify whether they are looking at a post-MBBS DNB seat through NEET PG or a Post Diploma DNB pathway through DNB-PDCET.

Documents to Prepare for NEET PG Counselling

Although the final document requirements must be verified from the 2026 MCC or state counselling bulletin, candidates should generally keep their NEET PG admit card; NEET PG result/scorecard when released; MBBS degree or provisional certificate; internship completion certificate; medical registration certificate; identity proof; Class 10 certificate or other accepted proof of date of birth; applicable SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PwBD certificate; state eligibility or domicile-related documents where required; passport-size photographs; and NRI/OCI-related documents where applicable ready.

Candidates should keep clear scanned copies for online processes and originals for physical verification wherever required.

The final checklist of the counselling authority and allotted institution should always take priority over a generic document list.

NEET PG 2026 Choice Filling: What Candidates Should Focus On

A good choice-filling strategy is not simply about finding the previous year's closing rank.

Candidates should consider their NEET PG rank, preferred branch, college, location, tuition fee, stipend, bond conditions, service obligations, hostel availability, hospital exposure, patient load, academics and long-term career priorities before deciding the final preference order.

Previous-year closing ranks can help estimate competitiveness, but they do not guarantee the same allotment in 2026.

Cutoffs can move because of changes in seat matrix, candidate preferences, reservation rules, newly added seats, fee changes and vacancies created during later rounds.

Do Not Use Previous-Year Exit Rules Without Checking 2026 Rules

This deserves special attention.

A candidate may find screenshots, videos or old counselling guides explaining what happened in NEET PG 2024 or 2025.

Those resources can help explain the process, but they should not be treated as the final rules for NEET PG 2026.

Before taking any irreversible action such as resigning from a seat, not reporting after allotment or participating in a later round, verify the rule directly from the 2026 MCC Information Bulletin or the relevant state counselling notification.

What Should Candidates Do Right Now?

As of September 17, 2026, the most useful step is preparation rather than trying to predict unofficial counselling dates.

Candidates can organise their documents, research colleges and specialities, study previous counselling trends, understand the difference between MCC and state eligibility, shortlist possible options according to rank and budget, and regularly check official counselling portals.

The official MCC PG portal currently continues to show the previous NEET PG 2025 counselling material, so candidates should wait for the dedicated NEET PG 2026 counselling schedule and Information Bulletin before relying on exact round dates or counselling fees.

For the most reliable updates, candidates should regularly check the NBEMS website for NEET PG examination and result notices, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) website for All India/Deemed/DNB counselling notices, and the official counselling website of the relevant state authority for state-quota counselling.

Avoid making admission decisions solely on the basis of unofficial schedules circulated through social media.
